Arts in Education

ARTS Obispo, in partnership with the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education, is recruiting practiced performing and visual artists with experience or interest to work in elementary classrooms in San Luis Obispo County. There is no teaching credential requirement to be qualified as a teaching artist, however, willingness and enthusiasm to work with public school students and to collaborate with their teachers is essential.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with U.S. state arts agencies to support Poetry Out Loud, a contest that encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

April 2018 brings the 40th Annual Children's Day in the Plaza led by the San Luis Obispo County Child Care Planning Council. In cooperation with this great occasion, ARTS Obispo facilitates Passport to the Arts.  These combined events provide artful activity for children and families to celebrate April as National Month of the Child and Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Led by ARTS Obispo in alliance with the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education, CreateSLO County Arts Education Alliance is a network of our community that believes the arts are core to an education. Our purpose is to advocate for arts education for all students in every school community in San Luis Obispo County.  We envision a core curriculum that provides sequential, standards-aligned arts education for every student.

The California State Summer School for the Arts is a rigorous, pre-professional, month-long training program in the visual and performing arts, creative writing, animation and film for talented artists of high school age. CSSSA provides a supportive environment in which students hone acquired skills and explore new techniques and ideas for an intense and exciting learning experience. The school was created by the California Legislature, and held its first session in 1987.
